The objective of this blog post series is to highlight some of the nearly forgotten snapshots of East Texas history. A variety of online databases and other virtual sources were the basis for the information collected by Haley Garrelts, a senior undergraduate student assistant at the Heritage Research Center. Garrelts spent the Spring 2020 semester researching the various ghost towns in most of East Texas’ known history. The blog post series is divided into seven categories – destroyed by natural disasters, directly related to Nacogdoches, unusual endings, founded by people from other countries, known tourist opportunities, impacted by war / Native American conflicts, and other. Equipped with pictures, this blog post series provides a portal to East Texas history that is accessible to all who care to learn about the nearly forgotten towns scattered around the region.
