Baseball in East Texas
The goal of this map is to provide a visual representation of the birth and evolution of minor league baseball in East Texas in the first half of the twentieth century. The information for the map was collected by Haley Garrelts, an undergraduate student assistant at the Heritage Research Center. Garrelts extensively researched minor league baseball teams from East Texas during the period of November 2018 to December 2019, focusing the data specifically on the years 1888-1970. The information includes team names, managers, years, star players, awards, records, city names, and fun facts, collected from a series of digital and print sources. Using modern county lines as a reference point, the information is filed accordingly so a visual product reflects the data collected. Parallels between the minor league team distribution and the oil boom in the first half of the twentieth century provide a basis for not only the team names, but also an explanation as to why smaller towns brought the game to the heart of the Piney Woods. The map may be filtered by year, league, team name, city name, or county name, allowing a more specific view of teams and their respective regions.
